Dear Ms. Peters, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to provide my perspective on prison conditions in the United States. In short, the prison system is not working. Many prisons are insufficient due to understaffing, high incarceration rates, and unsafe conditions for prisoners and guards. Prisons in Norway or Finland have more suitable systems and treat their prisoners much better. Implementing similar practices in the United States could impact the number of crimes, even those of a deadly nature. Many prisons in the United States are short-staffed or, in some cases, overpopulated. Because of this, many guards cannot be present if needed. Consequently, many guards left their jobs, exacerbating the problem. In 2000, prison understaffing had grown to 500. Understaffed prisons are not unique, and the Covid-19 pandemic increased the rate by almost 50, on top of the 500. Imagine working 30 hours a week when your boss increases the working hours by double your standard amount. Furthermore, about 200,000 guards have resigned, which is a huge concern as there are too many prisoners. | Anything
